Blogs & Wiki's

Blogs and Wiki's are hybrids of the more "traditional" websites and have rapidly become "must have" applications for many organizations.

Blogs

A Blog is a simplified website that can be used by one or many people to disseminate a large amount of information in a short amount of time.  A blog allows the writer to include links to other sites or documents.  A blog also may include an optional  comment section that allows readers to add their comments below each post.  These comments may be reviewed and approved by the blogs owner or posted automatically by individual user.  (The latter option is NOT recommended for business blogs!)

Wiki's

A wiki is a website that allows the easy creation and editing of multiple pages using only a web browser such as Internet Explorer.  Wiki's also allow multiple users to collaborate on the gathering and editing of information.  A wiki generally involves more widespread user involvement that a blog would and has  a more powerful ability to import and store various documents (including photos, video, etc. -- as well as copies of scanned documents, and "live" spreadsheets and word processing documents) which can be utilized by many people across a wide area.

The Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia which is edited and reviewed by users throughout the world.  Many corporations now utilize wiki's to maintain electronic case files where authorized personnel are allowed controlled access to notes and copies of documents -- a practice that is more efficient and secure than each employee maintaining  individual case files.
