In June, 1993 Water Consulting Specialists, Inc. began operation as a consulting, engineering, and validation organization serving the life science industry. As part of the activities, services expanded to on-site contract engineering work. Through 1999, Water Consulting Specialists, Inc. continued this scope of activities, providing professional services to major pharmaceutical companies. Subsequent to preparing a detailed system specification for a large consumer products manufacturer in late 2000, Water Consulting Specialists, Inc. was asked to provide a proposal for integration of all system components.
This concept commenced with preparation of initial engineering documentation, and proceeded through equipment specification and procurement, project management during equipment commissioning, and validation. The very first project executed had a total installed cost of about $1,000,000; considerably less than budgeted with a traditional EPCM approach, and was installed at a fraction of the time allotted in the original schedule. A successful approach to single-point design, build, commission, and validate for pharmaceutical water generation, storage, and distribution systems was borne.
As the concept of single-point responsibility associated with system integration grew, Water Consulting Specialists, Inc. staff increased. In early 2002 the company was expanded to include a technical service group to support client requirements subsequent to system completion. Further, the concept was applied to retrofit and enhancement of existing systems with great success. By 2005, scores of projects had been successfully executed.
